Description: The SOA Research Institute’s Aging and Retirement Strategic Research Program is interested in a broad exploration of issues related to aging and retirement for LGBTQ+ people. In issuing this call for essays, the Program aims to gather perspectives, opinions and data on the short and long-term consequences of applicable aging and retirement issues for a variety of stakeholders -- individuals, partners, family members, employers, financial advisors, and others --- and how these impacts may be felt both directly and indirectly. A primary aspect of this call for essays is to explore how retirement-related outcomes are experienced by LGBTQ+ people and the diversity of experiences within this group. Another aspect is to promote enhanced understanding of the underlying issues surrounding these differences. In this regard, there is interest in furthering understanding from an informational perspective and/or generating ideas for potential solutions and improvements.

Description: Millions of aging Americans are challenged to prepare for uncertain health and financial setbacks in addition to cognitive impairment that impacts one-third of adults over age 85. Advanced planning can reduce the negative impact of impairment on personal finances, including financial exploitation, scams and fraud, and care and spending decisions that are not aligned with retirement goals. To address these issues, the SOA’s Aging and Retirement Strategic Research Program co-sponsored work on the Thinking Ahead Roadmap which was created by a team from the University of Minnesota and Stanford Center on Longevity. Description: "Issues surrounding end-of-life and palliative care are not well understood and there is little research in the actuarial literature. From an actuarial perspective, however, end-of-life is important because of the significant cost to the healthcare system. Ian Duncan will discuss some of his research on the financial implications of end-of-life care, as well as the outcomes of a palliative care program. Dr. Matzo is an engaging personality with decades of experience in gerontology and palliative nursing, including training and teaching professionals in the field. Dr. Matzo focuses on educating the public on the importance and benefits of palliative care and hospice (care given in the final six months of life). In this session on “Palliative Care Public Education,” Dr. Matzo will give us an overview of the benefits of palliative care and how this knowledge empowers the individual to make important decisions about their healthcare options. Attendees will have the opportunity to discuss the role that the actuarial profession may play in this area."

The article has been updated for the SECURE Act and the SECURE 2.0 Act. The article describes the basic types of employer-based plans, provides of overview of the taxation of contributions and benefits when annuities are held in connection with plans and IRAs, explains the required minimum distribution rules, and offers a brief introduction to recent legislation impacting qualified annuities.
